My Desktop is just as old , 2002 Compaq Presario 5423US Pentium 4 1.6GHz with Windows XP Pro SP3 32bit. I too have problems connecting with my Linksys 'Cisco' AE2500 USB Wireless-N Network Adapter. The AE2500 works with my other 2 newer desktops and laptop. Something about Windows XP it hates. However, the AE2500 will randomly connect while plugged in the Compaq Presario USB port, meaning Once in every 100 attempts. The driver is functioning, seen in Device Manager, able to find Wireless Networks with and without WPA2 (Security) but refuses to connect. The Presario is on and running Windows XP, for the longest time won't connect but if you come back in 30 minutes, 1 or 3 hours .you just might see that you are connected .. WEIRD Science !!!

Now this might only apply because of my USB Adapter is made by Cisco. It could react the same with most manufacturers. I'd like to know what brand and model works the best with Windows XP myself.

I have not tried hard wiring / cable connected directly to my desktop computer from the Netgear Cable Modem. That might work 100 percent of the time whereas you cannot rely on Wireless.

Another thing that comes to mind is : Is USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 too slow in communicating with your router/ cable modem ??? Therefore, the signal won't connect unless Magic in the Air Waves occur.

You could try reformatting you Hard Drive (most likely old system uses PATA/IDE instead of SATA) and installing Window VISTA .

The Operating System might make a difference. I have not tried it yet as don't have the time.
